Sponsored Content Policy

WordPatch.co.uk occasionally publishes sponsored content as part of our funding model. This page explains what sponsored content is, how we label it, and the rules that govern its placement and production. Our aim is to maintain absolute clarity for readers while supporting the free, high-quality editorial content we produce.

What Is Sponsored Content?

Sponsored content is material that has been paid for by a commercial partner – a brand, publisher, software company, educational institution, or other organisation. It may take the form of an article, guide, interview, list, or feature. The partner commissions the piece or provides funding for its creation, and the content is produced either by our editorial team or by the partner’s own writers under our oversight. Unlike independent editorial, sponsored content is not generated from our newsroom’s own choices; it originates from a commercial arrangement.

How Sponsored Content Is Labelled

Every piece of sponsored content on WordPatch.co.uk carries a clear, prominent label that signals its commercial nature. The specific wording varies depending on the arrangement, but will always be one of the following, placed at the top of the page and often in the article summary or listing:

  • “Sponsored by [Brand]”
  • “Advertisement feature”
  • “Paid partnership with [Brand]”
  • “In association with [Brand]”
  • “Promoted publishing feature”
  • “Promoted software feature”

We never use labels that could be confused with our independent editorial sections. If you see any of the above markers, you can be certain the content was commissioned or funded externally.

Rules for Sponsored Content

  • Sponsored content is always clearly labelled, as described above. No disguised or “native” advertising that mimics independent editorial tone without disclosure.
  • Commercial partners may review sponsored content for factual accuracy and brand alignment, but they have no approval over our independent editorial reviews or any other editorial content that is not part of the sponsored arrangement.
  • Sponsored material is never presented as independent editorial. It is kept separate from our newsroom’s editorial workflow and is not subject to the same commissioning guidelines as our regular articles.
  • Any claims made within sponsored content must be truthful and verifiable. We reserve the right to refuse or amend material that violates our standards.

How Sponsorship Differs from Affiliate Links and Independent Reviews

It is important to understand the distinctions between these three revenue streams:

  • Affiliate links: When we link to a product or book retailer and may earn a small commission if you make a purchase. These links are always disclosed and do not affect editorial independence or recommendations. Our full policy is at Advertising and Affiliate Disclosure.
  • Independent reviews: Our editorial team selects products, books, and tools for review on merit alone. No payment or commercial relationship influences the outcome. Reviews are produced under our own editorial standards. See our Reviews Policy.
  • Sponsored content: A paid placement where the partner has a role in commissioning or funding the piece. It is always labelled accordingly and is subject to the rules on this page.

Editorial Independence

No commercial relationship – whether sponsorship, advertising, affiliate, or partnership – ever determines editorial conclusions or direction. Our editorial team remains entirely independent. For a full explanation of how we protect editorial autonomy, see our Editorial Policy and Ownership and Funding pages.
