WordPatch.co.uk was founded by Patchwork Digital Media Ltd. in 2025 to fill a persistent gap in the UK media landscape: a serious, accessible digital publication that treats the worlds of language, books, writing, digital tools and creative communication with equal weight and editorial rigour. Too often, coverage of these subjects is fragmented — literary criticism sits apart from practical writing advice, and coverage of digital publishing tools rarely speaks to the editorial professionals who use them. We saw an opportunity to bring these conversations together under one roof, for an audience that values clarity, expertise and honest guidance.
Why we started WordPatch.co.uk
The way we write, publish and consume words is changing rapidly. From the rise of AI writing assistants to shifts in book publishing, from new platforms for digital journalism to evolving standards in grammar and style, the field moves faster than most publications can keep up. At the same time, much of the available coverage is either too niche, too promotional or too shallow to serve readers who need reliable, thoughtful information. WordPatch.co.uk exists to provide that coverage: grounded in research, written by people who know the subjects, and designed for UK readers who want to understand not just what is happening in language and publishing, but why it matters.
Editorial philosophy under Harriet Langford
Our Editor-in-Chief, Harriet Langford, leads a team committed to the principle that trustworthy editorial content is built on transparency, rigour and independence. Every piece we publish is reviewed for source integrity, factual accuracy and editorial relevance. We do not chase clicks at the expense of quality. Harriet oversees our editorial policy (read our editorial policy), our corrections process (see our corrections policy) and our fact-checking standards (learn about our fact-checking policy). Under her direction, we ensure that every article — whether a book review, a writing guide or a tool analysis — meets the same high bar for honesty and usefulness.
Our desk structure
We organise our editorial work through four focused desks, each led by an experienced editor:
- Oliver Bennett, Managing Editor — oversees daily editorial planning, commissioning and workflow.
- Amelia Foster, Books & Publishing Editor — covers book reviews, publishing industry updates, author interviews and literary culture.
- Daniel Mercer, Writing & Education Editor — produces writing advice, grammar explainers, education resources and editing workflows.
- Sophie Kendall, Tools & Digital Culture Correspondent — reports on writing tools, AI software, digital publishing platforms and creator workflows.
Our Standards & Fact-Checking Lead, Thomas Ellery, reviews every sensitive piece before publication and maintains our source verification protocols. Full profiles of every team member can be found on our Our Team page.
